Our Flag Was Still There

I want to do something a little bit different this Friday. Yes, I'm in Rome. Yes, I'm living almost 5,000 miles away from my home. Yes, I've grown accustomed to Italian culture. However, my heart still resides in America.

America has been having a pretty intense week.

From the tragedies in Boston, the plant explosion in Texas, and even the drastic weather in Chicago, my heart goes out to my home country. I've been doing my best to stay updated on all of these events and it's all still so hard to wrap my head around. I hope and pray that things will settle down soon and the country can try to move forward.

The incredible thing about tragedies like this though is to show just how resilient Americans are. I'd like to share some fantastic quotes I've found circling online:

"All those maniacs can ever do is show just how good people are." - Stephen Colbert

"You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. ...So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, 'The good outnumber you, and we always will.' " - Patton Oswalt

"My mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother's words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers- so many caring people in this world." - Mr. Rogers

If you haven't seen it, the video of the national anthem at the Boston Bruins hockey game following the marathon is absolutely inspiring. I'm not ashamed to admit I teared up watching it. I am SO incredibly proud to be an American. I'm from the best country on earth.

Today, I could have shared pictures of me at the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, or maybe somewhere in Paris or Barcelona (promise, that post is coming soon). However, I'm going to take a different route. In honor of the past week and in regards to the three week countdown until I'm home, this post is for America.

Throwback. Love my country.
